Sue, for the history of the event, here is a Wiki link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootingsBut there was more to it and for me, the similarities of the social unrest in America then to the social unrest in Iran now are very similar. Nixon was a despotic control freak and the ruling party in Iran is also very controling. Nixon was elected on a promise of change, one of getting us out of the Southeast Asian war, yet he failed in his promise and the students of America began to rally together to demand social change that would lead to our getting out of the war.
The student unrest led to more and more confrontations across the country with Kent State becoming the bellwether for student cries for action. By this time the Vietnam war had escallated and the My Lai Massacre was in the news. Troops were coming home to be denigrated in public for their participation and Congress was running scared of the political unrest being shown on campuses across the US.
In Iran, the new political activists are very much like our activists then. They are young, educated and civically involved. They decry the political corruption that is the mark of their government and are demanding change for more civil rights. The death of Neda to me is as iconic as the death of the four dead in Ohio.
